Compassionate Vernon Counselling for Individuals, Couples & Families

At our Vernon counselling clinic, we support clients throughout East Hill, Harwood, Okanagan Landing, Pleasant Valley, Mission Hill, and across the North Okanagan region. Whether you prefer in-person sessions or online therapy from home, getting support should feel simple — and we make that a priority.

People come to us when they’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck in unhelpful patterns, exhausted by stress, or unsure how to move forward. Our registered counsellors help you process what’s happening and develop realistic strategies to improve how you feel day-to-day.

Our approach is warm, conversational, and grounded in real-life tools. You’ll never be rushed or given generic advice. We take the time to understand your experiences and support you in building clarity, emotional resilience, and confidence at a pace that feels comfortable.

We offer daytime, evening, and weekend appointments, making it easier to access support on your schedule. New clients are always welcome, and we make insurance simple: ICBC counselling is direct-billed, and all other extended-health plans receive a detailed receipt to submit for reimbursement.

Interactive Counselling is a Gold Award–winning counselling clinic, recognized for quality care across British Columbia.

In-Person, Online, and Phone Counselling for Vernon Clients

Our Vernon clinic at 4300 27 St Unit 5 is set up to feel calm, private, and unhurried — comfortable seating, sound-isolated rooms, no clinical fluorescent lighting. We offer three ways to access counselling, because the practical reality of life in the North Okanagan doesn’t always make weekly in-person sessions workable.

In-person sessions are the format most clients choose for their first 2–3 appointments — building trust tends to come more easily face-to-face. After that, many of our Vernon clients move to a hybrid: in-person when their schedule allows, online during busier weeks, or phone when video isn’t practical.

Online video sessions use a secure, healthcare-grade platform that meets Canadian privacy requirements. Online works especially well for clients in the surrounding region — Coldstream, Lumby, Armstrong, Spallumcheen, Enderby, Lake Country, Sicamous, and Salmon Arm — for whom the drive into Vernon adds an hour each way that often isn’t practical with kids, work schedules, or weather. Online is also the format we use most often for clients on Silver Star Mountain during the winter ski season, and for tourism-industry workers whose hours don’t fit standard 9-to-5 appointment windows.

Phone counselling is available for clients without reliable internet, those who prefer not to be on camera, or anyone whose first sessions feel easier without the visual element. Phone is also the format we recommend in crisis situations when attending the office isn’t possible — we’ll move to in-person or video as soon as it’s practical.

For couples specifically, we strongly recommend the first 1–2 sessions are in-person. Relational dynamics show up more clearly when both partners are in the same room, and our counsellors can do better assessment work. After that, video sessions work well for ongoing couples work — many couples find conversations actually flow more easily when each partner is in their own familiar environment.

Whatever format you choose, the rate is the same: $165 per 50-minute individual, youth, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and sport psychology session, $175 for couples and family sessions. ICBC counselling is direct-billed to ICBC Part 7 benefits for clients recovering from motor vehicle accidents — no out-of-pocket cost. For other extended health benefits (Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Beneva, etc.), we provide receipts you submit for reimbursement.

Counselling for Vernon’s Community and Way of Life

Vernon is a smaller community than Kelowna, and that creates both gifts and challenges for the people who live here. Our Vernon counsellors are trained to work with the patterns specific to the North Okanagan.

Smaller community, tighter social network. Vernon residents sometimes hesitate to seek counselling locally because they worry about being seen at a clinic by people they know. Confidentiality is foundational to our practice — our Vernon location is positioned to allow discrete arrival and departure, our records are kept secure, and what happens in your sessions stays between you and your counsellor. If anonymity is paramount for your situation, online sessions remove the visibility concern entirely.

Seasonal economy and tourism work. Vernon’s economy moves with the seasons — Silver Star Mountain in winter, Kalamalka and Okanagan Lake in summer, agriculture and viticulture year-round. Workers in seasonal industries often face unique mental health pressures: long hours during peak seasons, financial uncertainty during off-seasons, and the identity shifts that come with feast-or-famine work. We work with seasonal workers, hospitality staff, and small-business owners on managing these patterns rather than fighting them.

Retirement and aging. Vernon has a meaningful retirement population, and the mental health needs of older adults are often underserved. We work with retirees navigating identity transitions, grief, marital changes that surface after children leave home, age-related health concerns, and the loneliness that can accompany this life stage. Our approach is non-clinical and respectful of the depth of life experience our older clients bring.

Families and intergenerational dynamics. Many Vernon families have multi-generational roots in the region, and the social pressures around marriage, parenting, work, and “what people will think” carry weight here. We work with clients navigating those pressures — whether you’re grieving a relationship that ended, rebuilding after an affair, supporting a teen through school stress, or rethinking your own life direction in your 40s, 50s, or 60s.

ICBC accident recovery. Motor vehicle accident recovery counselling is a meaningful share of our Vernon caseload. Our counsellors are familiar with ICBC’s Part 7 benefits structure, the documentation required, and the realistic timeline of trauma recovery after a collision. Sessions are direct-billed — you focus on healing, not paperwork.

What to Expect From Your First Vernon Counselling Session

Most people hesitate before their first counselling appointment because they don’t know what to expect. Here’s the honest version of what your first session at our Vernon clinic looks like.

You’ll arrive at our office at 4300 27 St Unit 5. Sessions run 50 minutes for individual counselling, 75 minutes for couples first sessions (so both partners have time to share their perspective). Our counsellors begin by getting a sense of what brought you in — not in a clinical interview style, but as a regular conversation. You decide what you’re comfortable sharing in the first hour.

You will not be asked to relive the most painful parts of your history in the first session unless you want to. The first 1–2 sessions usually focus on understanding your current situation, what you’ve already tried, and what you’re hoping to be different. The actual therapeutic work begins once trust has been established and we’ve mapped what we’re working on together.

Most clients work with their counsellor weekly for the first 6–10 sessions, then taper to bi-weekly or monthly as things stabilize. Some issues resolve in 8–12 sessions; others — especially complex trauma, relationship repair after an affair, or longstanding patterns — take longer. We re-evaluate progress every 4 sessions and openly discuss whether to continue, change approach, or pause.

You will leave the first session with a clearer understanding of what counselling will look like for you, an honest read on whether your counsellor is a good fit, and a plan for the next session. If after 2–3 sessions the fit doesn’t feel right, we’ll match you with a different counsellor on our Vernon team — fit matters more than any particular credential, and we don’t take it personally.
