Comox Valley Counselling — Online Sessions with Registered BC Counsellors in Courtenay & Comox
The Comox Valley holds more life transitions per capita than almost anywhere in BC. Military families posted in and out of 19 Wing. Retirees starting their third act. Young families chasing Cumberland’s version of the good life. Healthcare workers holding up a hospital that serves half the Island. Every one of those transitions is exactly what counselling is for — and the Valley’s small pool of local practitioners has never matched the demand.
Interactive Counselling — voted Best Psychology Clinic Gold four years running (2023–2026) — serves Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland and the surrounding communities with a full team of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), Master Practitioners in Clinical Counselling (MPCC), Registered Professional Counsellors (RPC) and Registered Social Workers (RSW), by secure video and phone. Anxiety, depression, couples counselling, trauma and EMDR, grief, youth, family, autism and ICBC claims — 7 days a week, 8 AM to 9 PM, no referral needed.

Counselling that understands what a posting actually costs
19 Wing shapes the Valley — and shapes the private struggles inside it. Deployment cycles that turn one parent into two. Reintegration that’s supposed to feel joyful and instead feels like negotiating with a familiar stranger. Spouses who’ve rebuilt their careers and friend groups three postings in a row and are quietly exhausted by starting over. Kids changing schools again. And the release transition, where identity, structure and community all end on the same day.
Our counsellors work with military spouses, families and veterans on precisely these patterns — by video, which conveniently survives postings: begin counselling here and keep the same counsellor if you’re posted anywhere in BC. Serving members typically access care through base resources and CFMAP first, and we’re glad they exist; for spouses, kids and veterans, and for the relationship itself, we’re the team that doesn’t rotate out. Veterans Affairs Canada coverage may apply for eligible veterans — ask us and we’ll help you sort the paperwork.
Retirement, reinvention and the seasons in between
The Valley’s other great migration is retirement — and retirement is a bigger psychological event than anyone admits at the going-away party. Identity after the career ends. Marriages renegotiating twenty-four-hour proximity. The distance from grandchildren that seemed manageable in the brochure. Grief arriving more often as the decades accumulate. Counselling isn’t a crisis measure for any of this; it’s how you do the transition well instead of just enduring it.
Meanwhile Cumberland fills with young families trading city incomes for trail access, healthcare workers absorb an entire region’s pressure at the hospital, and seasonal tourism and Mount Washington winters keep half the Valley’s income cyclical. Different lives, same truth: everyone here moved toward something better, and “better” still comes with a nervous system. Ours is a counselling model that fits Valley logistics — no drive to Nanaimo, no waitlist roulette, no waiting room where everyone knows your kid’s coach.

What counselling costs in the Comox Valley
Individual sessions start at $165 and couples at $175 per 50-minute session — the same rates as our in-person clinics, with nothing added for online delivery. We direct-bill ICBC and BC Autism Funding. Extended health plans get detailed receipts — most BC plans reimburse RCC and RSW designations, many cover MPCC/RPC, and if both partners have plans, couples receipts can sometimes go to either. Crime Victim Assistance, FNHA and Veterans Affairs Canada may also apply. MSP doesn’t cover private counselling — but between the above, most Valley clients pay far less out of pocket than they feared.
Starting is three steps
1. Send the contact form (select “Other – Online Only”) or call (250) 859-4485. 2. We match you deliberately — by specialty, style and availability, not just next-empty-slot. 3. Your secure, PIPA-compliant video link arrives by email. No downloads, no accounts. Most clients start inside a week.

The evidence-based approaches behind Comox Valley counselling that works
CBT
The world’s most researched talk therapy for anxiety, depression and looping thoughts. Learn to catch the thought-feeling-behaviour spiral early and interrupt it with tools that hold up in real life — not just in session.
EMDR
Structured, research-backed trauma processing for memories stuck on replay — operational stress, accidents, childhood experiences. Fully validated for video delivery, always paced by you.
Gottman Method & EFT
The two most validated couples approaches on earth. Gottman gives concrete skills for conflict and friendship; EFT rewires the emotional cycle underneath the arguments. We use both, matched to your relationship.
ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy — clarify what actually matters, act on it, and stop treating every anxious thought as a weather warning. A natural fit for practical, outdoors-minded Valley clients.
Somatic & IFS approaches
Nervous-system regulation and parts work for trauma, perfectionism and the tension your shoulders have been holding since the last posting. Often paired with EMDR.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Forward-looking and momentum-first — build on what’s already working. Many focused concerns resolve in 4–6 sessions, and we’ll tell you honestly which kind yours is.
Nobody gets a one-size-fits-all protocol. Your counsellor assembles the plan around your goals and pace — and most Comox Valley clients notice meaningful change within 6–10 sessions. Counselling with us is a project with an arc, not a subscription: finish, then come back for a tune-up whenever life serves one up.
Three things to know before choosing a counsellor in the Comox Valley
Check registration before anything else. “Counsellor” isn’t a protected title in BC — anyone can hang the shingle. Registration is what protects you: RCC through BCACC, RSW through the BC College of Social Workers, MPCC and RPC through the CPCA. Every counsellor on our roster holds active registration and is bound by a published code of ethics, numbers available on request. Ask this of anyone you consider — including us.
Small-pool towns punish bad fit twice. In a limited local market, a counsellor mismatch costs you the weeks you spent trying plus the shorter list of alternatives left over. The research is unambiguous that fit drives outcomes more than technique or years in practice. Our team model converts “start the search over” into “switch counsellors with one email” — your intake follows you, your story doesn’t restart.
The Valley’s pace is a gift — and a trap. Places this beautiful make it easy to wait: after the posting settles, after ski season, after the reno. Meanwhile anxiety compounds and relationship grooves deepen. The kindest thing we can tell you is the boring truth: earlier is easier. Six months from now, you’ll either be six months into feeling better or six months further in.
Comox Valley counselling FAQ
Do you have an office in Courtenay or Comox?
Not at this time — we serve the entire Valley by secure video and phone from the same registered team behind our four award-winning clinics. In a region where the practitioner pool is small and demand keeps arriving by moving truck, that’s the structural fix: a deeper bench, same-week starts, and zero drive.
How much does counselling cost in the Comox Valley?
Individual sessions from $165, couples from $175, per 50 minutes. ICBC and BC Autism Funding are direct-billed; detailed receipts provided for extended health, CVAP, FNHA and VAC where applicable.
My spouse is CAF — can we do couples counselling around deployments?
Yes, and this is one of the most common things we help with. Sessions flex around pre-deployment chaos, mid-deployment solo stretches (individual support for the at-home partner), and the reintegration window — which is often harder than the deployment itself. Video means the same counsellor stays with you through all three phases, and through the next posting.
Does Veterans Affairs cover counselling?
VAC coverage may apply for eligible veterans depending on your situation and approved conditions. Bring your details to intake and we’ll help you figure out what applies before you spend a dollar.
Is online counselling as effective as in-person?
For most concerns, yes — decades of research shows video and phone therapy produces outcomes comparable to sitting in the same room. The active ingredient is the relationship with your counsellor, and many people open up faster from their own living room.
Can I do ICBC counselling online after an accident?
Yes — ICBC pre-approves counselling for eligible claimants, covers video and phone delivery, and we bill them directly. No referral needed, no out-of-pocket for approved sessions.
What about Denman and Hornby residents?
You’re precisely who online counselling serves best. No double-ferry logistics — just a session link that works wherever you have a connection, with phone-only sessions as backup when island bandwidth acts like island bandwidth.
I’m retired — isn’t counselling for younger people?
Counselling has no age ceiling, and the transitions of the third act — identity after work, marriage at close quarters, health changes, accumulating grief — are some of the most productive work we do. You’ve earned better than white-knuckling it.
How do teens handle online counselling?
Usually better than office visits — it’s their native format. Parents are involved at consent and intake, and involvement is calibrated from there. Posting-related school changes are a frequent and very workable focus.
Is it confidential? The Valley is a small place.
Fully — sessions are protected under BC’s PIPA on a compliant platform, limits explained plainly at intake. And with no waiting room, there’s no bumping into your neighbour, your realtor, or half the squadron.
Do I need a referral?
No. Contact us directly; we’ll match you with the right counsellor, usually within the week.
What happens in the first session?
Consent and confidentiality in plain language, then the real question: what has brought you in? “Everything is fine on paper and I am not fine” is a complete answer. You will shape goals together, set the pace, and leave with at least one practical takeaway — plus a gut read on whether this counsellor is your counsellor. No packages, no pressure beyond the next session.
How long does counselling take to work?
Most Valley clients see meaningful movement in 6–10 sessions; tight, single-issue work often lands in 4–6. Deeper patterns take longer, and your counsellor will say so upfront rather than let it drift. You are never signed into anything longer than the next appointment.
What technology do I need?
A phone, tablet or computer and an ordinary connection — the session link arrives by email, you click it, that is the whole system. No downloads or accounts. Phone-only sessions cover the rest, including Denman and Hornby bandwidth realities.
What if the fit isn’t right?
Switch counsellors with one email — your intake stays with the team, so nobody restarts their story. Fit predicts outcomes, and fit is a matching problem we can always re-solve.
You moved to the Valley for a better life. Counselling is part of the maintenance plan.
